The world is still reeling from the global phenomenon known as Boys Over Flowers (also called Boys Before Flowers). In this 2009 KDrama, we experienced love at first sight (thank you, Gu Jun Pyo), adorable bromance (thank you F4), and of course, and awe-stricken disgust (and that would be you Geum Jan Di).
Every Korean Drama heroine has one of them–best friends who act as side kicks, often sassier than the lead, and always there to help the heroine through their troubles whether they loan some much needed money (because you know most of the lead girls are broke or poor) or kicking some ass.
Gone are the days of ultra-perfect male leads. It is getting rarer and rarer to find KDramas whose main characters are even semi-normal. Not that I’m objecting or anything; I think it’s wonderful that it isn’t always the female lead who has some sort of abnormality. Continue reading

Last week, we posted the live performance of Junsu’s “Intoxicated”–his raunchiest and dirtiest lyrics ever–that features one of the most heinous use of English in a Korean song yet. It’s a common thing among native speakers to make fun of foreigners who can’t speak the language properly, who often use bad grammar, or have accents that suggests English wasn’t your first language (I belong in the last category). K-pop stars are not exception to the mockery. They’ve been the subject of major flubs with English lyrics and pronunciation.
We’ll be doing this weekly segment, where we discuss and analyze performances from various dramas in the past and present, every Fridays.
Nowadays, there are many idols who moonlight as an actor on dramas or movies. Sometimes, these transitions are more than welcome (hello T.O.P.) and other times, I wished they had stuck to being musicians. One of the most successful transitions (in terms of sheer increase in popularity) is Kim Hyun Joong, whose debut in Boys over Flowers swooned girls all over the world.
